Bringing your baby in for their newborn session is such a special experience—but I know it can also feel a little overwhelming, especially in those early days of adjusting to life with a newborn.
The good news? Your session doesn’t need to feel stressful or rushed. With just a little preparation, it can be calm, relaxed, and truly enjoyable—for both you and your baby.
Here’s exactly how to set yourself up for a smooth, stress-free newborn photoshoot.
1. Keep Baby Awake Before the Session
One of the biggest keys to a successful newborn session is a sleepy baby.
Try to keep your baby awake for about 60–90 minutes before you arrive. This might look like a bath or some gentle interaction. A tired baby will settle much more easily once the session begins, allowing for those soft, curled, peaceful poses.
2. Feed Baby Right Before You Leave (or When You Arrive)
A full baby is a happy baby.
Feeding your baby right before the session—or as soon as you arrive at the studio—helps them fall into a deep, content sleep. I always allow time for feeding at the beginning of every session, so there’s no need to feel rushed.
And if baby needs to eat again during the session, that’s completely expected. We follow your baby’s pace the entire time.
3. Dress Baby in Something Easy to Remove
To avoid waking or disturbing your baby, dress them in loose, easy-to-remove clothing. Preferably no onsie or anything that needs to go over their head in order to be removed.
The best option is a simple zip-up sleeper with nothing underneath. This allows us to transition baby into wraps and poses without unnecessary disruption.
4. Don’t Stress About Baby’s Mood
Babies don’t need to “perform” for their session.
Whether your baby is sleepy, alert, or a little unsettled at times—it’s all completely normal. Years of experience means I know how to gently soothe, pose, and work around whatever your baby needs in the moment.
Your only job is to relax. I’ll take care of the rest.
5. Plan for a Slow, Relaxed Experience
Newborn sessions are intentionally unhurried.
Expect your session to last anywhere from 2–3 hours. This allows plenty of time for feeding, soothing, and settling without ever feeling rushed. The calm environment is designed to keep both you and your baby comfortable throughout the entire experience.
6. Keep Outfits Simple and Timeless
If you’re planning to be in photos, neutral and soft tones always photograph beautifully.
Think creams, whites, soft grays, and muted earth tones. Simple, well-fitting pieces keep the focus exactly where it should be—on your connection with your baby.
Avoid bold patterns, logos, or anything overly trendy.
7. Trust the Process
It’s completely natural to feel a little anxious before your session—but trust that you’re in experienced hands.
Every detail, from the studio environment to posing and safety, is thoughtfully planned. Your baby’s comfort and safety are always the top priority, and everything we do is guided by that.
What You Can Expect
By the time your session is over, most parents tell me the same thing:
“That was so much easier than I expected.”
This experience is meant to feel calm, guided, and taken care of—so you can focus on what matters most: soaking in these fleeting first days with your baby.
Final Thoughts
You don’t need to have everything perfectly figured out before your newborn session. Just come as you are, with your baby, and I’ll guide you through the rest.
If you’re currently expecting and thinking about booking your newborn session, it’s best to reserve your spot during pregnancy to ensure availability.
