Newborn Safety During Portrait Sessions

As a newborn photographer, there's nothing more important to me than the safety and wellbeing of the tiny clients in my studio. Those adorable posed newborn photos you see require careful planning, patience, and strict safety protocols. Here's what you need to know about how I keep your precious baby safe during our portrait session.

Studio Environment

I maintain a warm studio temperature of 75-80°F to keep babies comfortable and sleepy during the session. All props, blankets, and surfaces are thoroughly cleaned and sanitized between sessions. I keep the studio calm and quiet, minimizing stress for both baby and parents.

Safe Posing Practices

**Parent involvement is key.** For any pose that looks precarious—like the "froggy pose" where baby's chin rests on their hands—I always have a parent or assistant with hands on the baby at all times. Many of those suspended or complex poses you see are actually composite images created in post-production by blending multiple safe shots together.

**I never force a pose.** If a baby doesn't naturally settle into a position, we don't do it. Every baby is different, and I follow their lead. Comfort and safety always trump getting a specific shot.

**Head and neck support.** I'm constantly aware of proper support for newborns' delicate heads and necks. I never place babies in positions that could compromise their breathing or circulation.

Props and Equipment

All props are carefully selected and tested for stability and safety. Bowls, baskets, and crates are always placed on the floor or secured surfaces—never elevated without proper support underneath. I regularly inspect all equipment for wear and tear.

Wraps and fabrics are breathable, and I'm always watching to ensure baby's face is clear and breathing is unobstructed.

Hygiene and Health

I wash my hands thoroughly before handling your baby and ask that anyone assisting does the same. If I'm feeling unwell, I'll reschedule the session—no exceptions. I also ask parents to reschedule if baby shows any signs of illness.

Timing and Flexibility

Sessions are baby-led. We take breaks for feeding, soothing, and diaper changes as needed. A typical newborn session can take 2-4 hours because we work at your baby's pace. There's no rushing when it comes to safety.

Your Role as Parents

Parents are encouraged—and often required—to stay within arm's reach during the session. You know your baby best, and your instincts are valuable. If something doesn't feel right to you, speak up. I welcome your involvement and trust your parental intuition.

Training and Experience

I've completed newborn safety training and continue to educate myself on best practices. I'm also trained in infant CPR and first aid, though I've never needed to use these skills in my studio.

The Bottom Line

While beautiful photographs are the goal, they're never worth compromising your baby's safety. I promise to treat your newborn with the same care and caution I would my own child. If a pose can't be achieved safely, we simply won't do it—and I'll use my editing skills to create the magic instead.

Your trust means everything to me, and I take the responsibility of caring for your newborn seriously. Together, we'll create beautiful, timeless images while keeping your little one safe and comfortable throughout the entire session.
