Newborn photos with dad can be as simple as holding your baby close and looking down at their face. You do not need to arrive knowing how to pose. At my Salem, NH studio, I guide where you stand, how you turn toward the light, and how we arrange your hands so the portrait feels comfortable.
These photographs from five different newborn galleries show how much variety we can create with a quiet background, a soft wrap, and a dad holding his baby. The photographs include soft ivory and blue wraps, simple neutral clothing, and both individual and family portraits. The focus stays on their faces and the way they fit together.
Simple ideas for newborn photos with dad
A close cuddle and a kiss
A gentle kiss on your baby's head gives you something natural to do. You can look down, bring your face close, or simply pause while holding your baby. I adjust the camera angle and lighting rather than asking you to keep changing positions. The small details—the size of your hand beside their head, their cheek, or a tiny curl—often make these portraits feel personal.

Looking down at your baby
You do not have to look at the camera in every photograph. Looking down at your baby creates a quieter portrait and can feel easier if you are uncomfortable being photographed. In the blue-wrap portrait below, dad's expression and the baby's sleeping face are the main details. A plain shirt leaves room for those details to stand out.
A portrait looking toward the camera
We can also make a more traditional portrait with dad looking toward the camera while holding the baby close. This works well alongside the candid-looking images in an album or on a wall. Let me know if you have a particular photograph in mind, and we will discuss how it fits your baby's comfort and the session.
What should dad wear for newborn photos?
A clean, comfortable shirt in a solid color is a good starting point. White, cream, gray, navy, or a muted neutral can work, depending on the background and the rest of the family's clothing. Large logos, bold lettering, and busy patterns can draw attention away from your faces.
Fit matters more than dressing formally. Choose something that lets you bend your arms and hold your baby comfortably without needing constant adjustment. Bring a spare shirt in case of spit-up. If your partner or other children are joining the portraits, coordinate a few colors rather than trying to make every outfit identical.

What if dad feels awkward in front of the camera?
You can tell me that before we begin. I will give you specific direction rather than leaving you to figure out what to do with your hands. Often we start with you looking at your baby, then make small adjustments to your shoulders and face. There is no need to perform or keep smiling throughout the session.
Your baby's comfort guides the pace. We can pause for feeding, changing, and settling, and adapt the portraits to how your baby is doing that day. These are professionally guided session examples, rather than poses to recreate on your own.
A closer view of baby in dad’s arms
A tighter crop can show the way your baby rests in your arms. Simple clothing and a quiet background make their small features the focus. I guide the hold during the session so we can photograph the details while keeping your baby supported.

Include dad on his own and with the family
If father-and-baby photographs are important to you, mention them when we plan your session. That helps us leave time for dad's individual portraits as well as images with parents and siblings. You can explore my newborn photography sessions to see more of the studio experience.
For families coming from nearby towns, my Windham newborn photography page and Salem newborn photography page share more about planning a studio visit. I also welcome families from Derry, Londonderry, Andover, and the surrounding Southern NH and Northern Massachusetts communities.
