One of the most common questions parents ask before booking is:

“How long does a newborn photography session actually take?”

And the honest answer is:

Longer than most other portrait sessions — but for a very good reason.

Newborn photography is intentionally slow, calm, and baby-led. Unlike family or senior sessions where we can move quickly from one pose to the next, newborn sessions are built entirely around your baby’s comfort and needs.

Most newborn sessions last anywhere from 2 to 4 hours, depending on the baby, feeding needs, sibling involvement, and the type of images we create together.

And while that may sound like a long time, the experience itself is designed to feel relaxed — never rushed.

Why Newborn Sessions Take Longer

Babies run the schedule.

That means we pause whenever needed for:

  • Feeding
  • Diaper changes
  • Soothing and cuddling
  • Swaddling adjustments
  • Outfit changes
  • Comfort breaks

The goal is never to “push through” a session quickly.

The goal is to create a calm environment where your baby stays comfortable while we capture natural, timeless images that you’ll love for years.

If your baby needs extra time to settle, we take it.

If your baby wants to eat three times during the session, that’s completely normal too.

This slower pace is actually one of the biggest differences between professional newborn photography and standard portrait sessions. What Happens During a Newborn Session?

Most newborn sessions follow a gentle flow rather than a rigid timeline.

Here’s what a typical session at my studio often looks like:

Arrival & Settling In

When you arrive, there’s time to get comfortable, unpack baby essentials, and settle into the studio space.

Many parents are arriving tired and adjusting to life with a newborn, so I intentionally keep the environment quiet, warm, and low-stress.

Wrapped & Cozy Baby Portraits

Most sessions begin with softly wrapped poses because babies usually feel secure and sleepy when swaddled.

This helps ease them into the session naturally.

Wrapped images are also perfect for capturing:

  • Tiny details
  • Peaceful expressions
  • Close-up portraits
  • Simple, timeless setups

Parent & Family Photos

Family images are typically woven throughout the session rather than rushed at the beginning or end.

This allows siblings and parents time to relax.

Many parents worry about being photographed shortly after birth, but my approach is intentionally natural and flattering. The focus is always connection over stiff posing.

What If My Baby Cries the Entire Time?

This is probably the biggest fear new parents have.

And truly — it’s okay.

Professional newborn sessions are designed with this in mind.

Some babies sleep the entire session.

Some stay awake.

Some need extra cuddles the whole time.

All of it is normal.

Years of experience working with newborns means I expect pauses, flexibility, and unpredictability. The session is never about forcing your baby into perfect poses.

Sometimes the most meaningful images come from the in-between moments:

  • A parent soothing their baby
  • Tiny stretches and yawns
  • Eye contact
  • Natural connection

Those are often the photographs families end up loving most.

If you’re nervous about how your session will go, you’re not alone. Many parents feel that way before booking, especially during those early newborn weeks.

When Should You Schedule a Newborn Session?

The best time to photograph newborns is usually within the first 2–3 weeks after birth.

During this window, babies tend to:

  • Sleep more deeply
  • Curl naturally
  • Settle more easily into poses

That said, beautiful newborn photographs can absolutely still happen outside that timeframe.

The most important thing is choosing a photographer whose style and experience make you feel comfortable.

Many families reserve their due date months in advance to ensure availability. If you’re currently expecting, you can learn more about the full experience on the newborn session details page

Does a Longer Session Mean More Stress?

Actually, the opposite.

The extra time is what removes pressure.

There’s no rush to hurry your baby through poses or transitions. We move at a pace that feels comfortable and calm.

Parents often tell me they expected the session to feel stressful, but instead it felt peaceful — almost like taking a quiet pause during the chaos of early parenthood.

That relaxed atmosphere matters because babies pick up on energy quickly.

The calmer the environment feels, the smoother the session usually becomes.

The Experience Matters Just as Much as the Photos

Newborn photography is about more than creating beautiful images.

It’s about preserving a chapter of life that changes incredibly fast.

The tiny fingers.

The sleepy stretches.

The way your baby fits perfectly in your arms.

Those details disappear quickly, which is why creating space for a slower, thoughtful session matters so much.
